A video on X can run 140 seconds, or 2 minutes 20 seconds, on a free account. Any paid plan raises that to 4 hours on x.com and the iOS app, and to 10 minutes on Android. Those are the limits in X's help centre as of October 2026.
The second half of this page covers what the limits mean for distribution. We measured 1,667 AI and tech launch videos in the Doomers launch directory against their views, split by account size, to see which lengths travel past the people who already follow you.
How long can a video be on X?
X caps a video at 140 seconds and 512MB unless the posting account pays for a plan. With X Premium, or any paid plan on The X Subscription, the cap is 4 hours and 16GB on x.com and iOS, and 10 minutes on Android.
| Account | Longest video | Largest file | Playback quality |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free X account | 140 seconds (2:20) | 512MB | 720p |
| Paid plan, x.com and iOS, under 2 hours | 2 hours | 16GB | 1080p |
| Paid plan, x.com and iOS, 2 to 4 hours | 4 hours | 16GB | 720p required |
| Paid plan, Android app | 10 minutes | Not stated by X | Not stated by X |
| Video in a DM | 140 seconds free, 10 minutes paid | 512MB free, 1GB paid | Not stated by X |
The post limits come from X's pages on sharing videos and longer videos. The DM limits and the 720p and 1080p playback split come from X's developer documentation. X says there is no limit on how many long videos a subscriber can upload.
How long can X videos be without Premium?
Without a paid plan, X's help centre puts the limit at 140 seconds and 512MB on every platform. That is the number to plan a launch around.
X's own documents give other figures. Its current developer documentation lists 20 minutes and 8GB for video posted from a default account through the API, and says those caps match the app. In April 2025 RouteNote, a music distribution blog, tested free accounts and uploaded videos of up to 9 minutes 59 seconds on the web.
The directory backs the stricter reading. Of the 178 launch videos that ran past 140 seconds, 177 came from accounts with a checkmark, which on X means a paid plan or a verified organisation. Since 98% of launch accounts carry a checkmark, that settles less than it seems, so test the upload from the posting account a week before launch day.
Which X plans allow longer videos?
Every paid X plan includes longer video uploads, including the cheapest one. Free accounts stay at 140 seconds.
X Premium is now part of The X Subscription, a single plan covering X, Grok and Cursor. New subscribers choose from Plus, Premium, Super and Ultra, and X's help centre lists all four as able to upload videos of up to 4 hours. Existing X Premium subscribers keep their old tier until they switch.
| Plan | US price, monthly on the web | Longer videos |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | No, 140 seconds |
| The X Subscription Plus | $8 | Yes |
| The X Subscription Premium, Super, Ultra | $30, $100, $200 | Yes, with full Premium+ benefits |
| Legacy X Premium Basic | $3 | Yes |
| Legacy X Premium and Premium+ | $8 and $40 | Yes |
Prices are from The X Subscription pricing page and X's Premium help page, before tax. That Premium page still quotes the older limit of about 3 hours and 8GB. The dedicated longer-videos page and the video upload page both say 4 hours and 16GB, and they are the newer pages.
What are X's video size and format specs?
Export an MP4 with H.264 video and AAC-LC audio at 1280 x 720 for horizontal, 720 x 1280 for vertical or 720 x 720 for square, at 30 or 60 frames a second. That is X's recommended upload, and a subscriber can upload 1080p and get 1080p playback.
| Spec | X help centre, web upload | X developer documentation |
|---|---|---|
| Smallest frame | 32 x 32 | 32 x 32 |
| Largest frame | 1920 x 1200, or 1200 x 1900 vertical | 1280 x 1024 for the strict check, 1080p for subscribers |
| Aspect ratio | 1:2.39 to 2.39:1 | 1:3 to 3:1, with 16:9 and 1:1 recommended |
| Frame rate | 40fps maximum | 60fps maximum, 30 or 60 recommended |
| Bitrate | 25Mbps maximum | 5,000kbps video and 128kbps audio minimum |
| Codecs | Prompts you if the format is unsupported | H.264 High Profile, AAC-LC audio in mono or stereo, YUV 4:2:0, progressive scan |
Two behaviours matter for a launch. X loops every video of 60 seconds or shorter, and a video adds nothing to the post's character count, so the copy above it keeps its full length.
Horizontal video is the norm for launches. Of the 1,667 in the directory, 94% are wider than they are tall, and 87% were uploaded at 1080p or above.
417 report 4K dimensions in X's API, larger than the help centre's stated maximum, and X scales them down for playback. Orientation, with the vertical-cut question, is covered in the best product launch videos of 2026.
Does video length affect views on X?
For accounts under 100,000 followers, yes. Launch videos of 61 to 140 seconds reached a median of 97 times the account's following, against 41 times for videos of 30 to 60 seconds. For accounts of 1M followers and above, length made no difference.
The measure here is the multiple: views divided by followers. It shows how far a post travelled past the people who already follow the account, which is the part of distribution a video can change. Raw views mostly track account size.
| Video length | Under 10K followers | 10K to 100K | 100K to 1M | 1M and above |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Under 30 seconds | 67× (69) | 25× (91) | 3.2× (92) | 0.8× (49) |
| 30 to 60 seconds | 88× (203) | 17× (152) | 3.9× (107) | 0.7× (61) |
| 61 to 140 seconds | 163× (336) | 35× (170) | 4.6× (99) | 0.9× (60) |
| 141 seconds to 4 minutes | 168× (57) | 12× (29) | 4.9× (24) | 0.8× (9) |
| Over 4 minutes | 85× (15) | 34× (24) | 4.5× (14) | 0.6× (6) |
Each cell is the median multiple of following, with the number of launch videos in brackets. The jump comes at one minute. For accounts under 10,000 followers, crossing 60 seconds took the median from 88 times following to 163 times.
Past 140 seconds the gain stops. Small accounts did about as well at 2:21 to 4 minutes as at 1:01 to 2:20, and mid-sized accounts did worse, from samples of 57 and 29. On this data, the free cap of 2:20 already covers the length that travelled furthest.
A longer video gives a stranger time to see the product work, which a small account needs because almost every viewer is new to it. A large account already has the audience, so a 20-second teaser does the job. What predicts a big launch shows the same pattern alongside timing and bookmarks.
What is the best video length for X?
For a launch from an account under 100,000 followers, aim for 61 to 140 seconds, which fits a free account. For an account above 1M, any length works, and short teasers dominate the biggest view counts.
The typical AI launch video runs 61 seconds, and the middle half sit between 36 and 94 seconds. 89% of launch videos fit inside the free 140-second cap, and half are 60 seconds or shorter, so they loop.
The loop showed no benefit. For accounts under 100,000 followers, videos of 46 to 60 seconds reached 55 times following and videos of 61 to 75 seconds reached 84 times. A demo trimmed to 60 seconds to earn the loop gave up reach.
Most guides to X video length recommend 15 to 45 seconds. Those figures come from ad guidance, from completion rates, or from counting the clips people make. Measured against views from small accounts, videos under a minute were the weakest length for an AI launch.
How long did the most-viewed AI launch videos run?
The 25 most-viewed launch videos of 2026 ran a median of 44 seconds, and they came from accounts with a median of 1.85M followers. The 25 that travelled furthest past their following ran a median of 85 seconds, from accounts with a median of 270 followers.
That split is the whole story of length on X, and frontier labs post short. Claude's two biggest launch films ran 73 and 82 seconds, and OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra launch ran 2:43 for 137M views. Small accounts that broke out ran longer: 20 of the 25 most-viewed launches from accounts under 10,000 followers ran a minute or more, and 6 ran past 2:20.
The launches Doomers ran fit the same range. TypeSafe AI's launch film ran 2:56 and reached 40M views from 1,500 followers. Skyfall AI's ran 2:36 for 5M from about 340, Nolla Health's ran 2:06 for 2.5M, and Pine Computer's ran 1:43 for 24.3M.
Two of those four needed a paid plan to post. The TypeSafe AI case study covers how that launch reached 150,000 signups in 24 hours.
How do you post a video longer than 2:20 on X?
Subscribe to any paid plan, then upload from x.com or the iOS app. Android caps paid uploads at 10 minutes, and free accounts stay at 140 seconds on every platform.
- Pick the cheapest plan that works. New subscribers start at Plus, $8 a month in the US. Legacy Premium Basic, at $3, also includes longer uploads for anyone already on it.
- Upload from the web or iPhone. Use the compose box on x.com, add the file from the gallery button, and post. Files under 2 hours can be 1080p and up to 16GB. From 2 to 4 hours, export at 720p.
- Test from the account that will post. Upload a private draft a week before launch day. Limits follow the posting account, so a founder's account and a company account can behave differently. Then pick the hour with the best time to post on X, measured on the same directory.
- Cut a 2:20 version anyway. On the data above it travels as far, it fits every account, and it gives you a clean edit for LinkedIn and other channels.
Splitting a long video across a thread keeps every clip under the free cap, though only the first clip sits in the launch post itself. If the launch post is the one that matters, put the full demo in it. Do you need a launch video covers when a produced film earns its budget and when a screen recording does the job.
How we measured it
We took every launch in the directory posted between 7 January and 23 October 2026 that carried a video and announced a product, a feature or a model. Funding announcements were left out. That gave 1,667 videos from 1,130 accounts.
Video length is the duration X's API reports for the file, rounded to the second. Views are X's public view count, and followers are the account's count when the post was read, or at the moment of posting where we recorded it, as for TypeSafe AI and Pine Computer. Checkmarks are as the account shows them today.
Every figure is a median, so one 100M-view post cannot move a row. The directory is built from launches people noticed, so these are the bar for a launch that got attention. This is observational data: teams that make a 2-minute demo may also have more to show, and length cannot be separated from that.
Questions people ask
How long can Twitter videos be?
Twitter, now X, allows videos of up to 140 seconds, or 2 minutes 20 seconds, on a free account, with a 512MB file limit. Paid subscribers can upload up to 4 hours on x.com and iOS, and up to 10 minutes on Android, according to X's help centre.
Can I post a 3 minute video on X without Premium?
No, according to X's help centre, which caps free accounts at 140 seconds. Some free accounts have reported longer uploads, and X's developer documentation lists 20 minutes for API posts, so test from your own account. Any paid plan, from $8 a month, removes the doubt.
What is the maximum video file size on X?
512MB on a free account and 16GB on a paid plan. Paid uploads under 2 hours can be 1080p, and videos from 2 to 4 hours must be 720p. A 2-minute launch video at 1080p usually comes in well under 512MB.
What is the best video length for X?
For accounts under 100,000 followers, 61 to 140 seconds. In 1,667 AI launch videos, that length reached a median of 97 times the account's following, more than double the 41 times for 30 to 60 seconds. Above 1M followers, length made no measurable difference.
What is the best aspect ratio for X video?
16:9 horizontal. X recommends 16:9 or 1:1, and accepts anything from 1:3 to 3:1 through its API. 94% of AI launch videos in the directory are horizontal, and a vertical cut is best kept for TikTok and Instagram.
Do videos loop on X?
Yes, X loops every video of 60 seconds or shorter. In the launch data, the loop added no reach: videos of 61 to 75 seconds from accounts under 100,000 followers reached 84 times following, against 55 times for 46 to 60 seconds.
Can you send a 10 minute video in an X DM?
Only on a paid plan. X's developer documentation caps DM videos at 140 seconds and 512MB for free accounts, and at 10 minutes and 1GB for subscribers.
What video format does X accept?
Upload an MP4 with H.264 video and AAC-LC audio, which is X's own recommendation. X asks for progressive scan, YUV 4:2:0 colour, stereo or mono audio and 60 frames a second or less, and tells you on upload if a file is in an unsupported format.
