Calculate your engagement rate
Enter a post's numbers from under the post or from its analytics. The calculator gives the rate by views and by followers, and places the post against launch posts from accounts the same size.
Engagement rate by views
Enter numbers only in the highlighted fields, and views above zero.
Followers is optional. The benchmark is the directory's launch posts from accounts the size you enter, or all of them if you leave followers empty. Numbers like 12k or 1.4M work.
How do you calculate engagement rate on X?
Engagements divided by views, times 100. Engagements here are the public counts under the post: likes, reposts, replies, quotes and bookmarks.
A post with 120,000 views and 564 engagements has an engagement rate of 564 ÷ 120,000 = 0.47%. The same figure per 1,000 views is 4.7, which is easier to compare across posts of very different sizes.
Some tools divide by followers instead. That answers a different question, and for launch posts it misleads, as the section on followers below shows.
X's own analytics shows a higher rate, because it also counts clicks, detail expands and media plays as engagements. X analytics explained covers the difference. The public rate is the one you can measure on anyone's post, so it is the one we benchmark.
What is a good engagement rate on X?
Around 0.5% of views is typical for a launch post, and above 1% is strong. Across 2,322 launch posts in the Doomers AI launch directory, the median engagement rate was 0.52% of views. The middle half ran from 0.23% to 1.01%.
By views, the rate barely changes with account size. Small accounts and accounts past 100,000 followers land close to the same median.
| Followers at launch | Launches | Bottom quarter | Median | Top quarter |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Under 1,000 | 253 | 0.13% | 0.45% | 1.16% |
| 1,000 to 10,000 | 754 | 0.23% | 0.51% | 1.06% |
| 10,000 to 100,000 | 636 | 0.24% | 0.54% | 1.11% |
| Over 100,000 | 679 | 0.28% | 0.53% | 0.85% |
These are launch posts, which are built to travel and usually carry a video. An ordinary post from the same account can sit higher, because more of its views come from followers who already care.
Engagement rate also falls as a post spreads. The first views go to followers and people close to the topic, and every later view goes to someone further from it.
Why engagement rate by followers misleads
A launch gets most of its views from people who do not follow the account. So engagements per follower measure how far the post travelled more than how good it was.
Launch posts from accounts under 1,000 followers drew engagements equal to 103% of the following, at the median. Accounts over 100,000 followers drew 0.9%. Both are normal for their size.
Use the rate by followers to compare an account with its own past posts. Use the rate by views to compare one post with another.
Should bookmarks count as engagements?
We count them, because X shows bookmark counts publicly on every post and they signal someone wants the post later. Without bookmarks the directory median falls to 0.36% of views.
Either is fine. Pick one definition and keep it when you compare posts, which is what the checkbox in the calculator is for.
How do you raise engagement rate on X?
- Lead with the thing itself. Launch posts that open on the product working get acted on. How to write an X post has examples.
- Be there in the first hour. Replies early tell the ranking model the post is worth showing, which how the X algorithm works explains.
- Check who the post reached. A post shown to the wrong people gets views and little else. Why your posts get no engagement goes through the causes.
Questions people ask
What is a good engagement rate on X?
For launch posts the median was 0.52% of views, counting likes, reposts, replies, quotes and bookmarks. The top quarter starts at 1.01%, so a post at 1% or above is doing well.
How is engagement rate calculated on X?
Add likes, reposts, replies, quotes and bookmarks, divide by the post's views and multiply by 100. Dividing by followers instead gives the rate by followers, which suits comparing an account with itself.
Why is my engagement rate in X analytics higher?
X's analytics counts clicks, detail expands and media plays as engagements, on top of the public counts. That makes its rate several times what the public numbers give.
Is a 1% engagement rate good on X?
Yes. It puts a launch post around the top quarter of the directory, where the top quarter starts at 1.01% of views.
Does engagement rate go down as views go up?
Usually. The first viewers are followers and people close to the topic, and each later wave is less likely to act. A big post at 0.4% can be a better post than a small one at 1%.
