Earned media value calculator, priced on real X launches

Earned media value (EMV) is views ÷ 1,000 × the CPM you would have paid for the same reach. The calculator below shows the formula as it works, prices the same reach as X ads and as paid creators, and uses sourced CPMs and data from 2,322 AI launches on X. The rest of the page covers why AMEC rejects advertising equivalents as a measure of value, and what to report next to them.

How much is a post on X worth in earned media value?

Divide the views by 1,000 and multiply by the CPM you would have paid for the same reach. The defaults below are the median AI launch in the Doomers AI launch directory, 637,000 views, priced at $6.50, the midpoint of the US average CPM for X reach campaigns.

Default is the directory median across 2,095 AI launches. 637k and 4.1M also work.

Reach and traffic are midpoints of US averages. Sources are in the CPM section below.

Engagements, optional

Likes, replies, quotes and bookmarks. The directory median is 5.2 per 1,000 views.

Default is the 2025 median cost per engagement on X ads.

As X ads, at a $5 to $8 CPM$3,185 to $5,096
Through paid creators, at a $40 to $50 CPM$25,480 to $31,850

The rows buy different reach. An ad goes to whoever the targeting picks. A creator post goes to people who chose to follow that person, and travels on through their quote posts.

The calculator runs in your browser and sends nothing anywhere. Every benchmark in the list is sourced in the CPM section, and the engagement fields are optional because, on X, they rarely move the answer.

What is earned media value (EMV)?

Earned media value is the price of unpaid exposure at the rate the same reach would have cost as advertising. It turns views, mentions and engagements you did not pay for into a dollar figure, so they can sit next to paid spend in a report.

In marketing, EMV means earned media value. In payments it is the chip-card standard named after Europay, Mastercard and Visa, and in project management it is expected monetary value, which is why searches for "what is EMV" return card readers.

Earned media is the attention other people choose to give you. Our guide to paid, owned and earned media sets out where each type starts and stops on an X launch.

What is the EMV formula?

The standard formula is EMV = (impressions ÷ 1,000) × CPM. The engagement-weighted version adds each engagement at a set value, so EMV = (impressions ÷ 1,000 × CPM) + (engagements × value per engagement).

MethodFormulaWhat it assumesWhere it breaks
Impression-basedViews ÷ 1,000 × CPMEvery view is worth one ad impressionPrices a scroll-past and a buyer reading the thread the same
Engagement-weightedImpression value + engagements × value eachAn engagement carries value beyond the viewDouble counts when the CPM already prices the engagement in

Click-basedEarned clicks × CPCThe traffic is the valueMisses everyone who saw the post and searched for you later

For the median launch in the directory, 637,000 ÷ 1,000 × $6.50 = $4,141. At the directory median of 5.2 engagements per 1,000 views, the same launch collects about 3,300 engagements, which add about $429 at $0.13 each.

The engagements come to about a tenth of the impression value. On X the CPM you pick decides the answer, so it is the number to source and state.

What CPM should you use for X?

Use what a comparable X ad would cost, which recent US benchmarks put at $5 to $8 per 1,000 impressions for reach campaigns. If you have run X ads to the same audience, your own account's CPM beats any benchmark.

The calculator's midpoints, $6.50 for reach and $11 for traffic, are the middle of Affect Group's average bands. The $0.13 per engagement default is the 2025 median cost per engagement on X ads from an EnrichLabs analysis of 7,000 agencies, as reported by Hootsuite.

Be wary of two common add-ons. Several calculators apply a "trust multiplier" of 1.5x to 3x, and one describes its own default as unmeasured and unpublished. Per-like and per-share values such as $0.04 a like are usually derived from the CPM with no named report behind them.

What would the same reach cost to buy on X?

At X ad rates of $5 to $8 per 1,000, the median launch's 637,000 views would cost $3,185 to $5,096. Bought through paid founders, engineers and technical creators at $40 to $50 per 1,000, the same views cost $25,480 to $31,850, six to eight times as much.

The two prices buy different reach. An ad reaches whoever the targeting selects, labelled as an ad, and it skips the X subscribers who pay to remove ads, which our X ads guide covers. A creator post reaches people who chose to follow that person, and each quote post it draws carries the launch into another network.

That onward spread is the earned part, and it compounds. Skyfall AI posted from a founder account with about 340 followers and reached 5M views. Posts naming Skyfall went from about 2 a day to 2,085 on launch day, and X gave it an Explore news story 26 minutes in.

EMV prices all of that network reach at the ad rate, the cheapest reach on the platform. Price the same views at the creator rate and the EMV grows six to eight times, which is why the CPM behind any EMV figure has to be on the page next to it.

How much of a launch's reach comes from outside its own audience?

For small accounts, nearly all of it. Across 2,095 AI launches in the directory, the median launch from an account under 10,000 followers drew 122 views per follower, and 99% of its views were in excess of its follower count.

Small accounts depend on the network for reach, and large accounts mostly reach their own audience. For an AI startup launching from a founder account, almost every view an EMV report prices arrived through other people's networks.

Method. Doomers AI launch directory, 2,095 AI launches posted 7 January to 23 October 2026 with both view and follower counts, read 25 October 2026, with excluded and delisted posts removed. The share above follower count is (views minus followers) ÷ views, the part of the count that one view from every follower could not explain.

Repeat views by the same person push that share up. Follower counts are the account's current count except for 9 launches with a recorded count at posting, which pushes small-account multiples down. Bulk imports into the directory start at 500,000 views, so medians lean toward launches that travelled.

What is a good earned media value?

There is no industry benchmark for a good EMV, because the figure moves with whichever CPM you choose. As a reference point on X at $6.50, the median AI launch in the directory is worth about $4,141, a 25th-percentile launch of 130,000 views about $852, and a 75th-percentile launch of 1.7M views about $11,332.

The comparison that holds up is against your own baseline. Skyfall's launch did about 2,170 times the views of the founder's normal post, and that multiple stays the same at any CPM.

Is earned media value a good metric?

EMV is a convention for putting exposure in dollars, and the measurement industry's own body rejects it as a measure of value. EMV is the social-media form of the advertising value equivalent (AVE), and AMEC's Barcelona Principles 3.0, published in July 2020, state that AVEs are not the value of communication.

The Barcelona Principles 4.0, launched at AMEC's summit in Vienna in June 2025, are firmer. They say invalid measures such as AVEs should not be used, and that communication should be judged by its outcome and impact.

TypeSafe AI shows the gap. Its launch post did 40.1M views from an account with 1,500 followers, which prices at about $260,000 at an X ad CPM and $1.6M to $2M at creator rates. Sequoia's Pat Grady put its first seven days of revenue at $100M, a number neither EMV figure predicts.

Doomers AI seeded that announcement to 80 to 100 accounts in the launch window, so an EMV on the whole view count would also price paid reach as earned. The TypeSafe case study separates the two.

What should you report instead of EMV?

Report outcomes and the signals that lead to them, each against your own baseline. For an AI or tech launch on X, these six carry more information than an EMV figure.

If a board deck still asks for EMV, label it "estimated advertising-equivalent exposure", state the CPM and its source, and put it below the outcomes.

How do you calculate influencer EMV for a creator campaign on X?

Add the views on every creator post, divide by 1,000 and multiply by your CPM, then set the result against what the creators cost. For a paid campaign, count the creators' own posts as paid media at their fee, and count the onward spread as earned, meaning quote posts and posts from accounts nobody paid, Explore stories, press and newsletter mentions.

Most influencer EMV formulas skip that split. They price paid creator posts as if they were earned, often with a trust multiplier on top, so a campaign can report an EMV larger than its cost from reach it bought.

On X, a creator's quote post carries the paid partnership label and the creator's own words, and it lands with the people who follow that creator. Our guide to creator amplification covers how a campaign is selected, briefed, timed and disclosed.

Questions people ask

Is earned media value real money?

No. EMV estimates what the same exposure would have cost as advertising, and nobody pays it to you. Report it next to signups, pipeline and revenue, which are real money.

What does EMV stand for in marketing?

Earned media value. Outside marketing, EMV is the Europay, Mastercard and Visa chip-card standard in payments and expected monetary value in project management.

How do you calculate EMV in a spreadsheet?

Put views in column A, CPM in B, engagements in C and value per engagement in D, then use =A2/1000*B2+C2*D2. Leave C and D empty for the impression-only figure.

What is the difference between AVE and EMV?

Advertising value equivalency (AVE) priced press coverage at the rate card for the same space or airtime. EMV applies the same idea to social views and engagements. AMEC's Barcelona Principles name AVEs as an invalid measure, and EMV inherits the problem.

What CPM is used for X in an EMV calculation?

Recent US benchmarks put X ads at $5 to $8 per 1,000 impressions for reach campaigns and $9 to $13 for website traffic, per Affect Group's Q2 2026 figures. Paid founders, engineers and technical creators on X usually charge $40 to $50 per 1,000 views. State which one you used, since it decides the result.

Should paid impressions count toward EMV?

Leave them out. Views on an X ad or a paid creator post were bought, so they belong with spend, and counting them makes a campaign look as if it earned what it paid for.

Do trust multipliers make EMV more accurate?

They make it larger. The 1.5x to 3x multipliers in some calculators come with no cited evidence, and one calculator describes its own default as unmeasured. If you use one, report the figure without it alongside.
