An impression on X is one time your post appeared on someone's screen. If the same person scrolls past it three times, that is three impressions. The view count under every post measures the same thing, so on X impressions and views are one number.
For an AI or tech company launching on X, impressions are the distribution number, the measure of how far an announcement travelled past the people who already follow the account. The definitions below come from X's own documentation, linked where they appear. The benchmarks come from 2,095 AI and technology launches in the Doomers AI launch directory, posted on X between 7 January and 23 October 2026, with views as of 25 October 2026.
What are impressions on X?
Impressions on X count the times a post appeared on a user's screen. X's developer documentation defines the impression count exactly that way and adds that it is not unique. The same user seeing a post twice counts as two impressions (X API metrics).
An impression is counted wherever the post shows up. That covers the For You and Following timelines, search, a profile, a reply thread and a link opened inside X.
An impression measures exposure only. It records that the post was on screen, and says nothing about whether anyone read it, watched the video or clicked.
Are impressions and views the same on X?
Yes. The public view count under a post and the impression count in its analytics measure the same thing, the number of times the post was displayed. X put the count on every post under the label "views" in December 2022, after years of calling it impressions inside analytics.
X's help centre adds three rules for how views are counted (About view counts):
- Any logged-in user's view counts, including the author looking at their own post.
- Views count whether or not the viewer follows the author.
- Repeat views count again, so a post opened on the web and then on a phone is two views. Embedded posts on other websites do not add to the count.
When a third-party tool shows a different impression figure from the view count, the usual cause is timing. One of them was read hours after the other, and a launch post can add millions of views in that gap.
Video views are a separate count. X adds up a video's views across every post that carries the same video, so a clip that two accounts posted shows one combined video view total (X API metrics).
| Metric | What it counts | Unique people? | Who can see it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Impressions | Times the post appeared on a screen | No | The author, in analytics |
| Views | The same count, shown under the post | No | Everyone |
| Video views | Plays of a video, summed across every post carrying it | No | Everyone |
| Engagements | Every action taken on the post | No | The author, in analytics |
| Video playback quartiles | People who watched to 0%, 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% | Yes | The author, through the X API |
What are unique views on X?
A unique view would count each person once, however many times they saw the post. X's published metric definitions describe impressions as explicitly not unique, and the one unique count they list is video playback, the number of unique users who watched to each quarter of a video.
So the honest way to estimate how many different people saw a post is to treat views as an upper bound. For a post that lives a few hours the two numbers sit close together. For a post that keeps circulating for days, repeat views from the same people make up a larger share of the total.
How do impressions relate to engagements on X?
Impressions are the denominator of every rate X reports. Engagement rate is engagements divided by impressions, so a post with 10,000 impressions and 100 engagements has a 1% rate.
X's analytics count private actions as engagements too, such as link clicks, profile clicks and taps to expand the post, so the rate in the panel runs above what the public counts suggest. X analytics explained defines every metric in the panel and gives the engagement benchmarks for each action.
How many impressions is good on X?
A good number of impressions on X depends on your follower count. For a launch post, the median ran from 117K views for accounts under 1,000 followers to 2.2M for accounts over a million, across 2,095 launches as of 25 October 2026.
| Followers when posting | Launches | Median views | Top quarter starts at | Median views as a multiple of followers |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Under 1,000 | 245 | 117K | 547K | 274× |
| 1,000 to 5,000 | 423 | 299K | 845K | 123× |
| 5,000 to 20,000 | 449 | 546K | 1.5M | 58× |
| 20,000 to 100,000 | 362 | 840K | 2.1M | 20× |
| 100,000 to 1M | 385 | 1.0M | 2.6M | 3.9× |
| Over 1M | 231 | 2.2M | 7.2M | 0.6× |
Read these as the bar for a launch that got noticed. The directory is built from launches people found and shared, so it skews toward posts that travelled, and nearly every one carries a video. An ordinary post from the same account will usually land well below its band.
The multiple column is the fairer test for a small account. Under 1,000 followers, the median launch reached 274 times its following, because nearly every view came from people who did not follow the account. Over a million followers, the median launch reached 0.6 times.
For a founder's everyday posts between launches, the useful comparison is your own history. A post that gets three times your usual impressions has found people beyond your followers. How many views is viral sets out where a launch moves into the top quarter and the top tenth.
What do impressions tell you about a launch's distribution?
Impressions against followers show how far a launch travelled through other people's networks. A small account cannot reach hundreds of times its following on its own followers, so those impressions came from quote posts, replies and the For You ranker showing the post to people who follow someone else.
That is the network effect of distribution on X. Each account that quotes a launch puts it in front of its own followers, and the ranker reads the early engagement as a reason to show it wider. How the X algorithm works covers what the ranker measures.
The largest gaps in the directory come from launches distributed this way. TypeSafe AI posted from 1,500 followers and passed 40.1M views, with Doomers AI’s creator network carrying the launch in the launch window (the case study).
What does a low impression count mean?
A post with single-digit impressions, such as 3 or 7, was shown on screens that many times and no more. On a new startup or product account that is normal, since X has no engagement history to rank the post on and few followers to show it to.
Low impressions on an established account usually trace to one of four causes. The usual suspects are a link in the first post, nothing for people to reply to, a topic its followers do not engage with, or signals the ranker reads as negative. How to get more views on X works through each one in the order worth checking.
How do you see your impressions on X?
Every post shows its view count publicly, next to the reply, repost, like and bookmark counts. For the full breakdown, open your own post and tap the analytics icon, the small bar chart under it, to see impressions alongside engagements, profile clicks and link clicks.
Impressions on someone else's post appear as its public view count. The private actions, such as their link clicks, stay visible only to the author.
Does X pay for impressions?
X's creator payouts follow engagement from Premium subscribers. In October 2024 X said it would pay monetised creators on the engagement their posts get from Premium users, in place of the ad revenue from replies, according to TechCrunch's report of the change.
Impressions still matter to that payout, because a post has to be seen before anyone can engage with it. For an AI or tech company, impressions matter for distribution. They are the top of every funnel that starts on X, and a launch has to reach founders, engineers and buyers before any of them can sign up.
Questions people ask
What does impressions mean on X?
Impressions on X means the number of times a post was displayed on a screen. Repeat displays to the same person count each time, so impressions measure exposure, and the number of different people who saw the post is lower.
What is the difference between impressions and views on X?
There is no difference in what they count. Views is the label X shows publicly under every post, and impressions is the same count inside analytics. A gap between the two in a tool usually means they were read at different times.
Do impressions count unique people?
No. X's documentation says the same user seeing a post twice counts as two impressions. The only unique-person counts X lists are for video playback, at each quarter of the video.
Does viewing your own post count as an impression?
Yes. X counts any logged-in user's view, and that includes the author looking at their own post. Embedded posts viewed on other websites do not add to the count.
How many impressions is good on X?
Judge it against your follower count. Across 2,322 launch posts, the median was 117K views under 1,000 followers, 546K at 5,000 to 20,000 followers and 2.2M over a million. For a founder's everyday posts, three times your usual impressions is a strong result.
How do I see my impressions on X?
Open your own post and tap the bar-chart icon under it. The panel shows impressions next to engagements, profile clicks and link clicks. The public view count under the post is the same impression total.
Why are my impressions on X so low?
Most low counts come from a new account, a link in the first post, a post with nothing to reply to, or a topic the followers do not engage with. Check them in that order.
