There are five ways to make money on X in 2026. X pays you directly through two of them: Original Content Rewards and Creator Subscriptions. The other three are paid by brands or by your own audience: sponsored posts, launch amplification, and selling something of your own.
For most creators the money is in the brand side. This guide covers each route, what it takes to qualify, and where the bigger cheques come from. We wrote it from the buying side: Doomers AI pays a network of 1,000+ founders, engineers and creators to post about AI launches on X.
The five routes, at a glance
- Original Content Rewards. X pays you for impressions on your original posts. You need Premium and a verified following.
- Creator Subscriptions. Followers pay you monthly for subscriber-only posts.
- Sponsored posts. A brand pays you to post about it, with X’s paid partnership label on the post.
- Launch amplification. A company pays you to quote or post about its launch on the day it goes out.
- Your own product. X becomes the shop window for a course, a newsletter, consulting or software.
Original Content Rewards: how X pays creators now
X replaced its Creator Revenue Sharing programme in August 2026. New sign-ups to the old programme closed on 7 August, and existing members could apply to Original Content Rewards from 8 September.
The new programme pays on qualified impressions: views of your original posts, mainly from Premium users on the Home timeline. Reposts and aggregated content earn less or nothing, which is the point of the change.
Reported eligibility is an X Premium subscription, 500 verified followers, and 500,000 verified Home timeline impressions over 90 days. Accounts with monetisation paused for a policy breach are excluded. X adjusts these thresholds often, so check the help page before you plan around them.
Payouts changed too. Since 2 September 2026, X pays US creators through X Money, which needs a verified phone number and Premium. Creators outside the US are still paid through Stripe.
What it pays in practice
X does not publish a rate per thousand impressions, and reported payouts vary widely by audience. Treat it as a bonus on posting you would do anyway. A creator whose posts reliably reach a few hundred thousand people usually earns more from a single sponsored post than from a month of rewards.
Creator Subscriptions
Subscriptions let followers pay you monthly for posts only subscribers see. X revamped the feature in March 2026 with subscriber-only threads and cards subscribers can share.
It works for creators with a specific skill people will pay to keep learning: trading, a technical field, a market others need to follow closely. It works less well for general commentary, where the free posts already give readers most of the value.
Reported revenue splits differ between sources, so read X’s current terms in Creator Studio before you set a price.
Sponsored posts on X
A sponsored post is a post you write and publish from your own account because a brand paid you to. It is different from a Promoted post, which is an ad the brand buys from X and runs from its own account.
Sponsored posts are allowed on X. Any post you are paid for, in money, product, equity or free access, has to carry X’s paid partnership label, which is also how the US FTC expects the relationship to be disclosed.
How brands decide what to pay
Brands that buy on X price on your median post, the middle of your recent posts, and on how closely your audience matches the buyer they need to reach.
An account whose posts typically do 60,000 views is worth more to a campaign than one with ten times the followers whose posts typically do 8,000. What we look for before we pay a creator walks through the checks one by one.
Setting your rate
Start from your median views and the kind of audience you hold, then price per post. What to charge for a sponsored post shows how the buyer builds the number, and what to agree before you post covers usage rights, approvals and exclusivity.
Keep sponsored posts a minority of what you publish. Readers forgive a labelled post that is useful to them, and they leave when the feed becomes ads. Sponsored posts and audience trust has the detail.
Launch amplification: the best-paid post on X
When a tech company launches on X, its first hours decide how far the post travels. Companies now pay creators to quote and post about the launch in that window, so it reaches the founders, engineers and investors who already follow those creators.
This is the route we run. Doomers AI pays creators in its network to carry AI launches, funding announcements and product drops, every post carrying the paid partnership label. TypeSafe AI launched from a founder account of 1,500 followers and reached 40M views, carried by 80 to 100 of them.
It pays well because a launch has a deadline and a buyer who needs reaching. A creator read by the right engineers is worth paying properly for one day of attention. We agree your rate up front, and your rate is what you get.
Who gets booked
- A stable median. Thirty posts between 40K and 90K views beat one at 2M and the rest at 4K.
- An audience with a centre. Founders, engineers, operators or investors in a recognisable area.
- Your own voice. You write the post from the brief, so it sounds like you.
- On time. A launch post that goes up two hours late misses most of the window.
Selling your own product or service
The largest incomes on X usually come from creators who sell something of their own: a course, a paid newsletter, consulting, a community, or software. X is where people find you, and the money changes hands elsewhere.
It compounds with the routes above. Every sponsored post and launch you carry grows the audience you sell to, and a creator with their own product can afford to turn down briefs that do not fit.
Which route to start with
- Under 1,000 followers: post originally and often. Nothing pays yet, and the median you build now is what brands will price later.
- 1,000 to 10,000: sponsored posts and launch amplification open up if your audience is specific. A small account read by the right engineers gets booked.
- Past 500 verified followers: apply for Original Content Rewards and treat it as a bonus.
- With a skill people pay to learn: add Subscriptions or your own product.
Questions we get asked
How do you make money on X in 2026?
Through five routes: Original Content Rewards and Creator Subscriptions, which X pays, and sponsored posts, launch amplification and your own product, which brands or your audience pay. For most creators the brand routes pay the most.
How many followers do you need to make money on X?
For Original Content Rewards X reportedly asks for 500 verified followers and 500,000 verified impressions over 90 days, plus Premium. Brand deals have no follower minimum. Buyers look at your median post views and who your audience is, so a few thousand of the right followers can be enough.
What is the difference between a sponsored post and a promoted post on X?
A sponsored post is published by a creator from their own account after a brand pays them, and it carries the paid partnership label. A promoted post is an ad the brand buys from X and runs from its own account.
Do you need X Premium to make money on X?
For X’s own payouts, yes: Original Content Rewards requires Premium, and US payouts through X Money require it too. Sponsored posts and launch amplification are paid by the brand and do not depend on Premium.
