What is the difference between AEO and SEO?
SEO is the work of getting a page ranked in a search engine's list of results. AEO is the work of getting your content quoted, cited or named inside the answer an AI system writes, in ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude or Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode.
They share a foundation, because an answer engine still has to find, fetch and read your page. They part ways on what wins, what counts as winning and how you can tell.
| SEO | AEO | |
|---|---|---|
| What competes | A whole page, by position | A single passage, by being quoted |
| Where you show up | A ranked list of links | Inside a written answer, beside a few cited sources |
| Payoff curve | Steep. First place takes most of the clicks. | Flat. Fourth of six sources is still named in the answer. |
| Query shape | Short typed keywords | Full questions, split by the engine into its own sub-searches |
| Authority signal | Links pointing at your domain | Independent pages describing you the same way |
| The click | The point of the exercise | Often never happens |
| Measurement | Search Console: impressions, position, clicks | Referral sessions, plus sampling the answers yourself |
The query shape row is the one teams miss. ChatGPT rewrites a question into its own searches before it reads anything.
When we asked it the difference between AEO and SEO, it searched for "AEO vs SEO answer engine optimization search engine optimization differences 2026" and for Google's own documentation on AI features. The pages that answer those sub-searches are the pages it reads.
What is AEO?
AEO stands for answer engine optimization. It is the work of shaping your content, and what other sites say about you, so that systems which answer questions directly pick your page as a source and name you in the reply.
It is the older of the two new terms. Search marketers first used it for featured snippets and voice assistants, the boxes and spoken replies that answered a question on the results page. Once chat assistants started searching the web, the same word stretched to cover them.
An answer engine is anything that replies to a question with written prose and a handful of sources. Today that means ChatGPT with search on, Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, Gemini, Claude and Microsoft Copilot.
Is AEO the same as GEO?
In practice, yes. AEO and GEO name the same job, getting your content into AI-generated answers, and the two words came from different places.
GEO, generative engine optimization, comes from a November 2023 research paper by researchers at Princeton and elsewhere, later accepted at KDD 2024. It tested rewrites such as adding citations, quotations and statistics, and reported visibility gains of up to 40% in generative answers. a16z put the term in front of marketers in 2025.
Some writers split the two: AEO for short direct answers such as snippets and voice, GEO for longer generated answers in chat. The tactics on both sides of that line are the same list, and Google's own guide names both acronyms and files them under SEO.
| SEO | AEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stands for | Search engine optimization | Answer engine optimization | Generative engine optimization |
| Where the term came from | Web search in the late 1990s | Featured snippets and voice answers | A 2023 research paper |
| Surfaces it targets | Ranked results in Google and Bing | Direct answers: AI Overviews, ChatGPT, voice | Generated answers in chat assistants and AI search |
| What winning looks like | A high position and a click | Being the quoted answer | Being named or cited in the answer |
Pick one word for your team and run one programme. The GEO version of this comparison, with the five places it parts from SEO, is in GEO vs SEO.
Does Google treat AEO as part of SEO?
Yes. Google's guide to its generative AI features, last updated in July 2026, defines AEO and GEO by name and says optimising for them is "thus still SEO".
The same page says you need no new machine-readable files, no llms.txt and no special schema.org markup to appear in its AI features. Google says those features run on the same core ranking and quality systems as the rest of Search.
A lot of AEO advice leads with schema as the technical lever. For Google's surfaces, the technical work is the SEO work you already know: crawlable, indexable pages, server-rendered, carrying helpful content that is hard to find anywhere else.
Do ChatGPT and Google cite the same sources?
They cite different sources, and the gap is wide enough to change where you spend. On 19 October 2026 we ran 21 questions about launching on X through ChatGPT, with web search on, and through Google AI Mode, and logged every source each answer cited.
ChatGPT cited doomers.ai in 9 of the 21 answers. Google AI Mode cited it in 0.
| Question type | Questions | ChatGPT cited doomers.ai | Google AI Mode cited doomers.ai |
|---|---|---|---|
| Data (view counts, biggest launches, a launch directory) | 7 | 6 | 0 |
| Buyer (who can run a launch, which agency) | 9 | 3 | 0 |
| How-to (how to launch, what creators charge) | 5 | 0 | 0 |
| Total | 21 | 9 | 0 |
Google's AI answers lean on Google's rankings, which is what Google says they do, and doomers.ai is a young domain with modest search authority. ChatGPT runs its own searches, and it pulled our launch directory's monthly pages and our X analytics guide because they hold numbers nobody else publishes.
Brand questions behaved differently. Asked how TypeSafe AI got 40M views, both engines cited doomers.ai, and Google AI Mode cited the TypeSafe AI case study directly, because we are the primary source for that launch.
One run is a sample, and answers vary between runs. The pattern held on 6 of 7 data questions, and it gives a working rule: for Google's answers, AEO is SEO, and for ChatGPT, a page can be cited before it ranks if it owns the fact.
What gets a page cited in an AI answer?
A fact only you publish, stated in a sentence that makes sense on its own, on a page the crawler can fetch. Our audit says the first part carries the most weight.
We have answer-first guides on all five how-to questions in the audit, with direct answers under question headings and FAQ markup. ChatGPT cited none of them. Those questions already have many competent answers on larger domains, and a retriever has no reason to pick ours.
The data questions went the other way. "What are the biggest AI product launches of 2026 on X" pulled four monthly pages from our directory of 2,322 AI launches, because it is the one place those view counts sit together.
Formatting makes a page quotable. Owning the number makes it the page that gets quoted. If you are deciding what to publish for AEO, publish the dataset, benchmark or price list only you can produce, then format it well.
How much of AEO happens off your site?
Most of the authority part. An answer engine writes from several sources at once, and when six pages describe your company one way and your homepage says another, the answer follows the six.
So the AEO version of link building is a count of independent pages that describe you, and a check on whether they use the same sentence. Links still matter, because the search indexes these systems query still rank pages by them.
Launches carry a specific catch. Posts on X are largely unreachable by these systems, so the thread with two million views counts for little directly. What gets retrieved is the newsletter write-ups, blog posts and roundups the launch causes.
That is why the sentence people repeat about you is worth deciding before the launch window opens. Narrative design covers that sentence, and getting cited by AI search covers the retrieval mechanics.
How do you measure AEO compared with SEO?
SEO has Search Console. AEO has two reads: referral sessions from the answer engines in your analytics, and asking your buyers' questions yourself on a schedule.
Clicks are a weak proxy here. Pew Research Center tracked the Google searches of 900 US adults in March 2025. People clicked a standard result on 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared and on 15% when none did, and clicked a link inside the summary on about 1%.
So count citations. Write down 10 to 20 questions a buyer asks, run each through the engines that matter several times a month, and log the share of runs that name or cite you.
Answers vary run to run, which is why share of runs is the number to track. Keep your SEO reporting as it is, since rankings still decide most of what Google's AI features can see.
Should a startup do AEO or SEO first?
Do the SEO site work first, because Google's AI features sit directly on it, then put the AEO budget into something other people will cite.
- Fix the base in a week. Server-rendered pages, a robots.txt that lets OAI-SearchBot and Googlebot in, one page per buyer question with the answer up top, and pricing and comparisons ungated.
- Publish one thing only you have. A dataset, a benchmark, real prices, a teardown with numbers. Our directory is ours, and it is what ChatGPT cites us for.
- Give other people a reason to write about you, with a launch, a funding round or a release. The write-ups are what the engines retrieve, so the reach of the moment sets the size of your citation footprint. That reach is the half Doomers AI works on, through paid, disclosed creator amplification in the launch window.
- Measure monthly by sampling. The same questions, several runs each, and the share of answers that name you.
Young companies feel the difference most. Ranking on Google takes links that accrue over years, while a ChatGPT citation can come much sooner if the page holds a fact nobody else publishes.
Questions people ask
Is AEO replacing SEO?
AEO is built on SEO. Google runs AI Overviews and AI Mode on its search ranking systems, and ChatGPT runs web searches before it answers, so a page that cannot be found in search is rarely quoted in an answer. The two run as one programme with two scorecards.
What does AEO stand for in marketing?
AEO stands for answer engine optimization, the practice of getting your content quoted or cited in answers from AI systems such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Google's AI Overviews. In customs and shipping, AEO means Authorized Economic Operator, which is unrelated.
Is AEO a real thing or SEO with a new name?
Both. The site work is SEO, and Google says so in its own guide. The new parts are the unit that competes (a quoted passage), the measurement (sampling answers, with no console) and the weight on what other sites say about you.
Is AEO the same as GEO?
Yes, for practical purposes. GEO, generative engine optimization, comes from a 2023 research paper, and AEO comes from search marketing. Some writers reserve AEO for snippets and voice and GEO for chat answers, but the tactics are the same list.
Do you need schema markup or llms.txt for AEO?
Google says its AI features need no special schema, no llms.txt and no AI text files. Structured data still earns rich results in regular search, and llms.txt takes ten minutes, so add either if you like. Google says llms.txt neither helps nor hurts visibility in its Search.
Can one page rank in Google and get cited in AI answers?
Yes. Put the direct answer in the first one or two sentences under each question heading, keep every claim attributable, and include data the reader cannot get elsewhere. That shape ranks well and quotes well.
Is AEO worth it for a startup?
Yes, if your buyers ask AI assistants which tools to use. The cheap half is a week of site work. The expensive half is producing data and moments that other people write about, and that half also brings in pipeline.
Should we hire an AEO agency?
Ask what they will do that your SEO scope does not already cover. The site work is SEO work. The additional half is getting independent sources to describe you, which is distribution, and the usual diligence questions apply.
