Who raised on Thursday 27 August 2026
3 rounds in the trade press, about $414M between them. 2 tech companies filed a Form D, $5.01B sold. The first list comes from the trade press. The second comes from Form D, the filing a company makes with the SEC within fifteen days of selling securities, whether or not it says a word in public.
The three we would relaunch
Instinct is the one to study, because the round was the smallest part of it. $250M co-led by Index and Benchmark at a $2.5B valuation, taking total funding to $350M. The company had been in private beta since February and the waitlist had reached 180,000 people before any of that was reported. The raise landed on an audience that already existed, which is the whole game.
Instinct, $250M at $2.5B
Three things did the work here and all three are plannable.
The narrative was seeded before the news. By the time the round was written up, "viral in Silicon Valley" was already the accepted description of the company. A funding announcement cannot establish that about itself in a day. It gets built over months, by people with audiences arriving at the same sentence in their own words, which reads as consensus because it is.
The product was scarce on purpose. Private beta since February, invitations instead of signups, and a waitlist number big enough to be a story by itself. 180,000 people waiting is a better proof point than the valuation, because it is demand. A valuation is a price a small number of people agreed to pay.
The use cases did the distribution. What travelled was users posting what they had made it do. Answering email, booking airport transport, hiring home services, shopping for insurance, and one person who used it to help buy a house. Every one of those is specific, repeatable and screenshotable, and a reader knows in about a second whether they want it. A company description does none of that work.
The house is the tell. Somebody at that company understood which single example would get repeated, and made sure it was in the room when the story ran. That is a decision, and it is available to a company with 1,800 users as much as one with 180,000.
Databricks, $5B in the filings
The paperwork behind the round announced on the 13th at a $190B valuation, led by Coatue with Blackstone, MGX and T. Rowe. At this size the raise is a credit event, and the company treats it as one. The number that mattered in its own release was the $7B revenue run rate, which is the correct call. Nobody is choosing a data platform because of the valuation.
Worth watching for what it signals to everyone below it. Every AI infrastructure company now has a comparison point for what serious looks like, and the ones raising at a hundredth of that size will be measured against the same vocabulary.
Deep Cogito, $43M
Self-improving models, which is a claim that carries its own audience. This is the size where a launch changes the trajectory. Forty three million buys a research team and about six months of attention, and attention is the part most companies at this stage spend on nothing.
We would run it on the argument. A lab making a claim about models improving themselves has a technical position worth defending in public, and the people who would join or buy are the same people who follow that argument. The round is the reason the room is open. The argument is what fills it.
Who just took money
Technology and software companies that sold securities inside the last 45 days and filed the paperwork that says so. The filing is public the day it lands. For a lot of these companies it is the only public record of the round there is.

Restricted to the industry groups a venture-backed technology company files under, which on Form D means Other Technology, Computers, Telecommunications and Business Services. Funds, SPVs, property partnerships and offerings open to non-accredited investors are excluded, as are offerings whose first sale was more than 45 days ago. Amounts are the total sold to date on that offering, which can cover more than one tranche. Where an outlet is named we found coverage of that round in the feeds we index. Where none is named we did not find any, which is a limit of what those feeds reach and not evidence the round went unreported.

Raised, and no launch behind it?
A funding round is the one moment a company gets attention it did not have to buy. Most of it is spent on a press release nobody reads. We run the other version.
